Kalbe Farma Cancels Rp500 Billion Share Buyback as Indonesia’s Healthcare Market Shifts

PT Kalbe Farma Tbk has canceled a planned share buyback worth as much as Rp500 billion, reversing a corporate action announced only days earlier as the Indonesian healthcare company reassesses market conditions. The decision came after Kalbe had disclosed plans to repurchase shares amid significant fluctuations in the market.

The buyback had been announced on Sept. 16, with the company initially planning to begin purchases the following day and continue through Dec. 17, 2026, subject to applicable regulations. Kalbe said the cancellation was related to significantly fluctuating market conditions but did not provide a more detailed explanation.

The decision followed a period of substantial pressure on Kalbe’s shares. The stock had fallen almost 40% from the beginning of the year before the company announced the proposed buyback, increasing attention on management’s approach to capital allocation and investor confidence.

Kalbe is also reviewing parts of its capital spending program. Chief Financial Officer Kartika Setiabudi previously said the company had initially allocated about Rp1 trillion for capital expenditure in 2026 but was reviewing several projects because of changing business conditions and global geopolitical uncertainty.

The review comes despite stronger operating performance in the first half of the year. Revenue increased 14.06% to Rp19.47 trillion during the first six months of 2026, according to recent financial data reported on the company.

Kalbe’s latest corporate disclosures show that capital management has become a significant part of its investor agenda. Its investor-relations page lists the share-buyback announcement and subsequent corporate disclosures alongside changes to its board committees and affiliated transactions.

The company’s decision to cancel the buyback also means cash that might have been used to purchase shares remains available for other corporate purposes. Kalbe had originally indicated that the buyback would be financed from internal funds and that the action could reduce interest income by about Rp8.4 billion if completed in full.

The pharmaceutical company has spent recent years broadening its healthcare ecosystem beyond traditional medicines. Its businesses span prescription pharmaceuticals, consumer health products, nutrition and distribution, giving the group exposure to several parts of Indonesia’s growing healthcare market.

For investors, the immediate issue is whether Kalbe will prioritize business expansion and capital expenditure over shareholder returns as market volatility continues. The cancellation of the Rp500 billion buyback suggests management currently prefers to retain greater flexibility rather than commit cash to repurchasing shares.

Kalbe’s next financial results will therefore be important for assessing whether the stronger revenue trajectory seen in the first half can continue while the company manages currency pressure, supply-chain uncertainty and capital spending. The combination of rising sales and a more cautious capital-allocation stance is likely to remain a central issue for KLBF investors.
