China’s steel make ASEAN producer suffer

Economic of scale and pricing strategy make China steel product has do good penetration in ASEAN market.  China’s steel export registered 106.73 million tonnes in 2016. Finished steel export to ASEAN,  rose by a double digit of 14% y-o-y to 36.4 million tonnes in 2016.
China’s export of bar to ASEAN remained significant, at 13.3 million tonnes in 2016, an increase of 11.5% y-o-y. However, the export volume dropped 50% y-o-y to less than half a million tonnes in January 2017. Among the six countries in ASEAN, Indonesia was the main destination of bar export from China with a volume of 3.6 million tonnes in 2016. The volume declined by half to 133,859 tonnes in January 2017. The second largest destination was Philippines. The export volume in January 2017 registered 121,371 tonnes, a decline by 32.4% y-o-y 
China’s section’s export to ASEAN was 1.7 million tonnes in 2016, an increase of 24% y-o-y, but the volume declined significantly by 27.5% y-o-y to less than 100,000 tonnes in January 2017. Export to Vietnam registered the highest volume among the six countries in ASEAN in 2016. However, the volume dropped significantly by 33.8% y-o-y to 41,365 tonnes in January 2017. Export volume to Philippines in 2016 was 310,263 tonnes, an increase of 56% y-o-y, while the volume in January 2017 was 31,940 tonnes, up 15% y-o-y. 
China’s wire rod export to ASEAN declined slightly in 2016 to nearly 5 million tonnes and the volume continued to drop further at a rate of 36.8% y-o-y to 243,556 tonnes in January 2017. Major destinations within the region were Philippines, followed by Vietnam. Export to Philippines continued to increase from the growth rate of 21.5% y-o-y in 2016 to 772,455 tonnes which further surged by 80% y-o-y to 102,070 tonnes in January 2017. Export to Vietnam, on the other hand, slowed down from the positive growth rate of 3.2% y-o-y in 2016 (at 1.38 million tonnes) to a decline of 38.6% y-o-y in January 2017 (at 68,361 tonnes). 
Hot rolled plate export from China to ASEAN decreased significantly, by 40% y-o-y in January 2017 to 145,296 tonnes, compared to an increase of 11% y-o-y in 2016. The main destination in the region was Vietnam, at 73,006 tonnes in January 2017, a significant decline of 60% y-o-y in January 2017. On the other hand, export to Thailand, the second largest destination in the region, continued to increase significantly from the rate of 54% y-o-y in 2016 to the rate of over 300% y-o-y to reach 36,210 tonnes in January 2017. 
China’s export of hot rolled coil to ASEAN continued to increase significantly with a growth rate of 30% y-o-y in 2016 to 5.5 million tonnes and a growth rate of 70% y-o-y in January 2017 to nearly 600,000 tonnes. Export to Vietnam continued to increase, doubling in volume to 534,327 tonnes in January 2017, making it the largest destination of total China’s hot rolled coil export. 
China’s cold rolled coil export to ASEAN in 2016 totalled 1.1 million tonnes, an increase of 19.5% y-o-y. In January 2017, the volume was 128,016 tonnes, a sharp surge of 101.4% y-o-y. The bigger destination of China’s CRC export in ASEAN was Vietnam. The export volume of 83,186 tonnes in January 2017 was a significant four-fold increase over January 2016.  
Coated sheet export from China to ASEAN registered a significant growth rate of 37% y-o-y to 4.9 million tonnes in 2016 but the volume declined slightly by 1% y-o-y to 329,674 tonnes in January 2017. The two major destinations for China’s coated sheet export in January 2017 were Vietnam and Thailand, at 89,664 tonnes and 88,819 tonnes respectively. Export to Thailand continued to increase significantly by 36.4% y-o-y in 2016 and 49.1% y-o-y in January 2017. On the other hand, export to Vietnam showed a sharp decline, by 17% y-o-y in January 2017.

In the other hand,  the growing china’s steel in ASEAN market has make local steel producer suffer. In average, most of their sales performance slowing down significantly.
